One-on-One Discipleship

Title: We are sloppy and unfinished...

Funny how kids love dirt, mud, puddles - anything messy - they'll take it. Get right in the middle of it.
Adults, not so much.
We even avoid it, trying hard never to engage.
We may not be neat freaks, but we are either too grown up, or aren't willing to pay the price afterwards to clean up and remove the slop. Praise the Lord, that was not how Jesus was. Like a child, He engaged the offensive and unpleasant. He engaged me and you.
What holds people back from true discipleship and being involved in a relationship that moves people forward towards Christ? Therein becoming like Him in thought, action, obedience, with His heart transplanted for the rest of our journey here? I think it has little to do with time or lack of feeling inadequate. We want to be safe, keep clean and not have our _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ connect with another person's messiness. The missing blanks spell "wholeness." Wrong.. How about "messiness."
We are sloppy and unfinished as disciplers and disciplees. We can't be afraid to rub shoulders with the world. As we clean them off in discipleship, so often we get cleaned up by a Holy Spirit that works that way.
In the Oliver Stone movie, Wall Street, Charlie Sheen's character, Bud Fox, is about to meet Michael Douglas' Gordon Gekko for the first time. He says to himself, "Life is about a few moments, and this is one of those moments."
Such is discipleship. I get a chance to see someone else experience a moment. In that God often blesses me with my own moment. Look for someone today around you, who needs a moment. In taking a step with them, you may grab your own.
