Title: New Kid in the Clubhouse

New Kid in the Clubhouse
by Ray Willis

As a college freshman, I earned a scholarship to play baseball. The prospect of playing the game I loved year-round in Southern California was a dream come true. Suffice it to say that I was beyond eager as I looked forward to being a part of the team and meeting teammates.

Well, being one of the new kids on the block (no, not the boy-band), I quickly realized that there were rules and a structure that I was unfamiliar with. The upper-classmen sought to dole out on us what was doled out on them as freshmen, and rather than being welcomed as teammates, we were seen as threats to the starters because we could beat them out for their position. Rather than camaraderie, there was suspicion. Cliques were abundant, and, aside from the coach, no one seemed very helpful.

I eventually found my way and became team captain. Once I was captain, I changed the culture of the team. No more hazing. No more cliques. We were a team that needed one another if we were to be successful. Without discipleship, being new to the faith can seem much like my experience. When we consider that we always have new kids on the block, it becomes incumbent upon us to reach out to them and show them the ropes. Otherwise, the church—even Christianity—can seem to be an exclusive club that they’re not particularly welcome to join.
